LOS ANGELES - Greg Lagreid and Jared Prince had three hits each as the Washington State Cougars defeated the USC Trojans, 13-3, in a Pac-10 Conference game at Dedeaux Field. The Cougars used an 18-hit attack and scored 11 runs in the first four innings.

Michael Weber went 2-for-4 with three RBI while Jay Ponciano hit a three-run homer for Washington State (20-18, 9-5). With Oregon State's 5-3 win today at UCLA, Washington State and Oregon State are tied for second in the Pac-10, a half game ahead of USC (21-18, 10-7) and UCLA.

Chad Arnold improved to 5-2 on the season for the Cougars, going 5 2/3 innings and allowing three runs (one earned) on five hits with five walks and five strikeouts.

Freshman first baseman Ricky Oropesa had two RBI for the Trojans, who committed five errors in the game.

In the first, Shea Vucinich reached on Grant Green's error, stole second and scored on Alex Burg's RBI double. Derek Jones then hit a chopper that Oropesa misplayed for the second error as Burg scored. Lagried later singled and advanced to second on Prince's single. Weber then singled home Lagried as the Cougars posted five hits in the first inning. Burg would leave in the game in the second with a left knee injury after colliding with Oropesa at first.

WSU made it a 6-0 lead in the third on RBI singles from Garry Kuykendall, Matt Argyropoulos and Vucinich. USC scored their only runs with three in the third after loading the bases. Oropesa hit a two-run single to center and Anthony Vasquez hit a sacrifice fly to center.

With one out in the Cougar fourth, an error by USC second baseman Joe De Pinto set up runners at first and second. Weber then singled home Lagreid and another RBI single by Kuykendall made it an 8-3 score. Ponciano then hit his first home run of the season with the three-run shot to right. USC had the bases loaded again in its half of the fourth, but Green grounded out into a 5-3 double play to end the threat.
