April 24, 2014
LOS ANGELES - The USC baseball team took game one of the key Pac-12 series 10-0 over crosstown rival UCLA behind a stellar eight scoreless innings by Trojan ace Wyatt Strahan on Thursday evening at Jackie Robinson Stadium.
Strahan (Villa Park, Calif./Villa Park HS) went 8.0 innings, holding the Bruins to just five hits, while striking out seven and walking just two. He will carry a streak of 20 scoreless innings into his next outing.
The Trojans tallied their 10 runs on 13 hits. They were led at the plate by Timmy Robinson (Huntington Beach, Calif./Ocean View HS), who drove in three on his first home run of the season, Vahn Bozoian (Chino Hills, Calif./Ayala HS), who had three RBI on a bases-clearing double and Jake Hernandez(Rancho Cucamonga, Calif./Los Osos HS), who was 2-for-5 with two RBI.
The Trojans got to Bruin ace James Kaprielian early, knocking him around for four runs in the top of the fourth inning and never looked back. With runners on second and third and just one out, Hernandez singled in the first Trojan run of the day.
Then with two down and runners on the corners, Robinson picked a great time for his first home run of the year, depositing the 1-1 pitch over the left field wall on a line to plate three and put the Trojans up 4-0.
The Bruins threatened throughout the game, getting the lead batter on in four different innings, but Strahan worked out of bases-loaded jams in the first, fifth and sixth innings.
The Trojans added another run in the seventh inning on a two-out single up the middle by Dante Flores(Norwalk, Calif./St. John Bosco HS) that chased Bruin starter Kaprielian.
Where the Trojans broke the game open was in the top of the ninth, as they got to reliever Burke. The Trojans put up five runs on three hits in the inning. With one down and runners on second and third, Hernandez drove in his second run of the night to put the Trojans up 6-0. After Robinson walked to load the bases with two outs, Stubbs scored from third on a wild pitch to put the score at 7-0. Omar Cotto Lozada(San Juan, Puerto Rico/The Bonneville School) drew a walk to reach base for the fourth time in the game to load the bases. Burke was lifted for new Bruin pitcher Chase Radan. With two outs and the bases loaded, Bozoian punctuated the Trojan scoring with a bases-clearing double down the left field line to put the score at 10-0.
In the bottom of the ninth, James Guillen(Covina, Calif./Damien HS) retired the Bruins in order to preserve the victory.
Tonight's win snapped a Bruin nine-game winning streak over the Trojans.
The Trojans and Bruins will meet again in game two of the series at Jackie Robinson Stadium on Friday at 7 p.m. PT.
