USC Wins Again In The Eighth For 3-1 Victory Against Oregon
April 17, 2011
LOS ANGELES - Alex Sherrod's double down the first base line snapped the tie in the eighth inning Sunday as the USC Trojans won a Pac-10 Conference series in a 3-1 victory against the Oregon Ducks, taking the final two games of the series. The Trojans (15-20, 6-6) have won four of their last five games and two consecutive conference series.
Logan Odom gave up one run in 7 2/3 innings, scattering seven hits. He struck out five batters and walked two in the no-decision. Chad Smith picked up his first victory on the season while Ben Mount recorded his first career save.
Danny Pulfer finished the weekend for Oregon (17-16, 2-7) with a 9-for-14 performance at the plate, adding a 2-for-5 day today with the Ducks' lone RBI. Duck starter Alex Keudell went 6 1/3 innings and gave up one run on 11 hits with no walks and three strikeouts.
KC Serna doubled in the third for Oregon and scored on Pulfer's single to center. USC had runners at the corners in the bottom half of the third with two outs, but Oregon was able to catch Houts off third trying to steal as catcher Jack Marder ran him down for the third out.
De Pinto blasted a triple to right, leading off the USC fourth as Matt Foat hit a sacrifice fly to center for the tie game.
In the Oregon fifth, the Ducks loaded the bases with one out, but Odom was able to strike out Pulfer and get a groundout from Brett Thomas for the momentum boost. The Ducks brought in closer Kellen Moen in the eighth, still tied at 1-1. Moen walked De Pinto and then was called for a balk while facing Sherrod. He then unleashed a wild pitch to move De Pinto to third and Sherrod followed with a line drive that just stayed fair for the eventual game-winner. Brandon Garcia later brought Sherrod home with a sacrifice fly.
The Trojans got a bit of a scare when Smith had to leave in the game in the ninth after suffering an undisclosed injury on a 2-0 count, but Mount got pinch-hitter Kyle Garlick to ground out for the second out. A walk to Serna brought Pulfer to the plate as the tying run, but lifted a fly ball to right to finish the game.
USC travels to Loyola Marymount on Tuesday for a 3 p.m. non-conference game before a Pac-10 series at Washington, Thursday-Saturday (April 21-23). Friday and Saturday's games start at 6 p.m. with a 1 p.m. start on Sunday. All four games will be broadcast live (audio only) on usctrojans.com.
Notes: Matt Foat went 1-for-3 today and now has a 10-game hitting streak (tied for longest streak this season, Ricky Oropesa)...Logan Odom has a 1.71 ERA in four Pac-10 Conference starts this season...Garret Houts pushed his season average to .340...USC will play seven of its next eight games on the road.
