April 16, 2013
LOS ANGELES - The Trojans began their eight-game road test at Loyola Marymount on Tuesday afternoon in big fly fashion, as Jake Hernandez and Vahn Bozoian hit back-to-back home runs to propel the Trojans to a 5-2 victory.
The back-to-back shots from Hernandez (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif./Los Osos HS) and Bozoian (Chino Hills, Calif./Ayala HS) came in the top of the sixth with one out, and broke the 1-1 deadlock to put the Trojans ahead, 3-1. The Trojans would never look back, plating a run in the seventh on an RBI single from Greg Zebrack (Northridge, Calif./UPenn) and another in the ninth on another RBI single from Hernandez.
The Trojans got stellar outings from a combination of five pitchers, with freshman righty Brent Wheatley (Villa Park, Calif./Orange Lutheran HS) getting the start, going two complete innings, allowing only one run on two hits, while striking out one. After freshman left-hander Marc Huberman (Los Angeles, Calif./Hamilton HS) put up a zero in the third inning, senior right-hander Matt Munson (Irvine, Calif./Saddleback College) got the win, going three complete innings, not allowing a run on two hits, while striking out three. The victory puts him at 2-0 on the year.
Freshman righty Brooks Kriske (Palm Desert, Calif./Palm Desert HS) then put up two scoreless innings in the seventh and eighth, before another freshman in Kyle Twomey (Placentia, Calif./El Dorado HS) threw the ninth, allowing one run, but shutting down the Lions to give the Trojans the victory.
The Trojans got in an early hole in the bottom of the second, as the Lions had runners on second and third, one out, and an RBI groundout from Kevin Garcia put the Lions up, 1-0.
The Trojans answered in the top of the third, off a new Lion pitcher, Brandon Horth. With one out, James Roberts (Cupertino, Calif./Archbishop Mitty HS) and Kevin Swick (La Canada, Calif./Loyola HS) delivered back-to-back singles. On a flyout to deep center by Blake Lacey (Clovis, Calif./Clovis HS), where Lions' center fielder Zac Fujimoto made an excellent diving catch. With two outs, Zebrack singled up the middle to score Roberts and tie the game, 1-1.
From there it was all Trojans, as the back-to-back homers came in the sixth inning, Zebrack drove in his second run of the game in the seventh and Hernandez added a second RBI on a single in the top of the ninth to put the team up, 5-1.
Although the Lions put up a run in the bottom of the ninth, the Trojans finished the two-game midweek sweep of the Lions with a 5-2 victory.
The Trojans remain on the road, heading to Utah for a Pac-12 series beginning on Friday, April 19.
