    LOS ANGELES - Freshman catcher Jeff Clement's three-run homer to left center in the seventh provide the go-ahead runs Tuesday and the USC Trojans defeated the Loyola Marymount Lions, 8-5, in non-conference action at George Page Stadium. With the win, the Trojans tie a season-high with their fourth straight victory.

    USC improves to 19-17 overall while Loyola Marymount falls to 21-17 on the season.

    Clement's 17th home run was his first one to the opposite field this season. He is now tied with three players for 10th on USC's all-time single season list for most home runs. He improved his season-high hitting streak to 14 games, batting .439 (25-for-57) with four doubles, six home runs and 18 RBI.

    Rudy Quinonez (1-0) earned his first collegiate win with 2 1/3 innings of relief, allowing one run on two hits.

    The Trojans scored twice in the second when Billy Hart singled, followed by a double down the right field line by freshman designated hitter Ryan Broderick. An infield single by third baseman Michael Moon scored Hart and Broderick scored on a wild pitch by LMU starter Jeff Stevens. Moon went 4-for-6 on the afternoon in the leadoff spot for the Trojans.

    LMU scored its first run in the third on an RBI double by Chris Pettit to score James Cooper. The Lions took the lead in the fifth on a two-run single by designated hitter/pitcher Josh Whitesell.

    After Clement's home run put the Trojans ahead 5-3, the team added a run in the eighth and two more in the ninth. Billy Lockin led off the ninth for the Lions with his second home run of the season off Quinonez. After an RBI double by Whitesell, USC reliever Bret Butler struck out Brad Takemori looking to end the game.

     

     

    USC will travel to California for a Pac-10 Conference series this week, beginning on Thursday (April 17) at 2 p.m. The series will continue on Friday (April 18) at 2 p.m. with the series finale on Saturday (April 19) at 1 p.m. All three games will be broadcast live on usctrojans.com.
