Combined One-Hitter Catapults the Trojans to a 5-0 Victory Over No. 15 Arizona State
April 12, 2013
LOS ANGELES - Behind a combined one-hitter from starter Sean Silva and reliever Brent Wheatley, the first such feat since 1996, the Trojans defeated Arizona State, 5-0, in game one of the Pac-12 series at Dedeaux Field on Friday night.
In just his second start as a Trojan, Silva (Fresno, Calif./Fresno City College), went six complete innings, allowing only one hit in the fourth inning to Michael Benjamin, while striking out four and only walking one. The junior college transfer took his first USC victory in the game.
Wheatley (Villa Park, Calif./Orange Lutheran HS) was equally as dominant in the final three frames, taking his second career save, while not allowing a hit and only walking two.
The last time the Trojans combined for a one-hitter came on March 21, 1996, as the four Trojans held Cal Lutheran to one-hit in a 20-0 blowout.
Tonight the Trojan offense got going in the bottom of the third inning, as the hot-hitting Kevin Swick (La Canada, Calif./Loyola HS) led off with a double to right field. Freshman shortstop Blake Lacey (Clovis, Calif./Clovis HS) had a productive out as a groundout advanced Swick to third. Another freshman, center fielder Timmy Robinson (Huntington Beach, Calif./Ocean View HS) delivered the sacrifice fly to plate Swick and put the Trojans up, 1-0.
They struck again in the bottom of the third, as AJ Ramirez (Bakersfield, Calif./Bakersfield Christian HS) singled up the middle to lead off the inning. Freshman left fielder Turner Clouse (Fountain Valley, Calif./Fountain Valley HS) laid down the sacrifice bunt to advance Ramirez to second. That opened the door for redshirt senior Greg Zebrack (Northridge, Calif./Campbell Hall HS) to deliver the RBI single to right field and give the team at 2-0 lead.
In the bottom of the fifth, the Trojans added two more runs to their 2-0 lead, as Clouse had a one-out single and Zebrack doubled down the left field line to put runners on the corners. Adam Landecker (Calabasas, Calif./Calabasas HS) had the sacrifice fly to score Clouse, and Zebrack advanced to third. With two outs, the Trojans took advantage of an error by the Sun Devils' left fielder to plate the second run of the inning.
In the bottom of the eighth, the Trojans struck one final time, as Swick led off the inning with his second hit of the day, a single to right field. With one out, Robinson singled to put runners on the corners. Garrett Stubbs (Del Mar, Calif./Torrey Pines HS) executed the safety squeeze to put the Trojans up, 5-0.
The Sun Devils' starter Trevor Williams took the complete-game loss, allowing five runs (four earned), on 12 hits, while striking out one and walking none.
The Trojans and Sun Devils will be back in action on Saturday at Dedeaux Field, as the second game of the series is set for 2 p.m. PT.
