LOS ANGELES - Junior right-handed pitcher Wyatt Strahan tallied a career-high 11 strikeouts in seven complete innings of work, but the USC baseball team was unable to plate the game-winning run, falling 3-2 to Utah on Friday evening at Dedeaux Field.

Despite some early control issues, Strahan (Villa Park, Calif./Villa Park HS) settled in for a strong start for the Trojans, allowing only two runs on two hits in seven innings of work, walking three to his career-high 11 strikeouts. The junior finished with the no decision.

The Utes plated two runs in the top of the fourth inning, after the leadoff hitter struck out, but reached on a wild pitch. With one out and the runner on second after a sac bunt, a triple by Cory Hunt plated the first run of the game for the Utes. A squeeze bunt plated the second run of the inning and gave the Utes an early 2-0 lead.

In the bottom half of the inning, Kevin Swick (La Canada, Calif./Loyola HS) led off the inning with a walk and although he was cut down on a fielder's choice from Garrett Stubbs (Del Mar, Calif./Torrey Pines HS), Stubbs stole second to put himself in scoring position. Jeremy Martinez (Fountain Valley, Calif./Mater Dei HS) singled up the middle to score the speedy Stubbs from second to get one back from the Utes, 2-1.

The Trojans were able to manufacture a run in the eighth inning off Utes' ace Mitch Watrous. Blake Lacey (Clovis, Calif./Clovis HS) led off the inning with a double down the left field line. After a sac bunt advanced the runner to third, Omar Cotto Lozada (San Juan, Puerto Rico/The Bonneville School) delivered the sac fly on the first pitch he saw, tying things up, 2-2.

The Trojans only gave up four hits over the 13 innings, with two of those hits coming in the fourth inning and another two in the top of the ninth. The Trojan staff of Strahan, Jeff Paschke (Santa Barbara, Calif./Santa Barbara HS) and Kyle Davis (Garden Grove, Calif./Garden Grove HS) held the Utes scoreless for eight innings.

The Trojans had multiple opportunities to draw the walk off victory in the ninth, 10th, 12th, 13th. In the 10th, 12th and 13th innings the Trojans had runners in scoring position, but they were unable to come through with the clinch hit.

The Utes tallied one run on two hits in the loss. In the top of the 13th inning, an infield single by Konnor Armjio drove in the eventual game-winning run.

The Trojans and Utes will be back in action on Saturday, April 12 at 2 p.m. PT
