No. 3 USC Loses to No. 19 ASU

TEMPE, Ariz. -- The 19th-ranked Arizona State baseball team (26-14, 13-6 Six-Pac) defeated the third-ranked Southern California Trojans (29-10, 14-6 Six-Pac) 7-5 this evening in front of a crowd of 3,179 at Packard Stadium.
The game was tied at four when the Devils exploded in the bottom of the eighth for the second straight night. The Devils struck for three runs, off Willie Bloomquist's bases clearing double, to give ASU the lead for good. Bloomquist ended the night 2-for-5 with four RBI. Also leading the Devils was junior Andrew Beinbrink who knocked his second home run in as many days. Beinbrink now has eight on the season. He finished the night 1-for-2 with two RBI and one run scored. Junior catcher Jeremy Jones also continued his hot hitting with a 2-for-3 outing, knocking in one and scoring one. Starting pitcher Richy Leon pitched five-plus innings, giving up only three hits and one earned run. Relief pitcher Aaron Kramer (5-2) picked up his fifth win of the season, going three-plus innings giving up three hits and only one earned run. Head coach Pat Murphy was proud if his ball club tonight.
"It was a long, long game with a lot of mistakes on both sides. But I am really proud how these guys hung in there tonight," said Murphy.
Southern California was led tonight by Wes Rachels who went 2-for-2 with two runs scored and one RBI. First baseman Robb Gorr drove in two runs for the Trojans, one on a sacrifice fly and the other on a ground out. Relief pitcher Jason Lane (4-1) picked up the loss for USC going two innings giving up three hits, including Bloomquist's bases clearing double in the eighth.
The Sun Devils will face Southern California in the final game of the three-game conference series tomorrow at 1 p.m. at Packard Stadium. Probable starting pitchers are RHP Rick Currier for the Trojans and LHP Phill Lowery for the Sun Devils.
