    LOS ANGELES - Chad Bunting and Mitch Delfino had three hits each Friday as the California Golden Bears beat the USC Trojans, 16-9, in game one of a Pac-10 Conference series at Dedeaux Field. Delfino had two RBI while Jimmy Bosco went 2-for-5 with two doubles and three RBI as the Golden Bears had 18 hits in the game.

    California improved to 18-10 on the season with its sixth straight victory, moving to 4-3 in conference. USC is now 15-15 overall and 2-5 in Pac-10 play.

    Erik Johnson picked up the win for Cal after giving up four runs in the first, but keeping the Trojans scoreless after the rough start. Johnson went 5 1/3 innings and allowed nine hits with three walks and nine strikeouts. USC starter Kevin Couture got knocked out in the third, giving up nine runs (seven earned) on nine hits in 2 1/3 innings as the Trojans committed a season-high six errors in the game.

    Four other Cal starters had two hits each (Brian Guinn, Danny Oh, Mark Canha and Tony Renda). Matt Hart went 3-for-5 with one RBI while Taylor Wrenn was 2-for-5 with a home run and three RBI.

    After Joe De Pinto doubled and Mike O'Neill walked in the bottom of the first, Oropesa hammered a three-run homer to left center for his 11th of the season and seventh in the last 12 games. Keith Castillo added an RBI single as USC took the 4-1 lead, but the Golden Bears responded with 13 unanswered runs.

    Renda and Bunting both singled to lead off the second with Bosco hitting a two-run double to right. Delfino singled and Marcus Simien hit into a double play as Bosco scored the tying run. Cal scored six runs in the third as they collected six hits with two Trojan errors leading to the 10-4 lead after the third. With the 14-4 lead in the sixth, the Trojans rallied with five in the bottom of the fifth with Wrenn clubbing his first homer as a Trojan with a three-run shot to right. Brian Diemer came in and threw two scoreless innings in relief to stave off the Trojans in the latter part of the game as Cal added two insurance runs in the ninth.

    The series continues tomorrow with a 1:30 p.m. start. Sunday's series finale will start at 1 p.m. Both games will be broadcast through a live video webcast on usctrojans.com.
