LOS ANGELES - Junior third baseman James Roberts provided the decisive run with a solo home run in the eighth inning, giving the Trojans a win in a wild back-and-forth game against Stanford Sunday at Dedeaux Field.

In a game that featured 26 hits and three errors, Roberts' was the biggest. The Cardinal had plated three runs in the top half of the eighth erase a Trojan lead and tie the game at six, but Roberts (Cupertino, Calif./Archbishop Mitty HS) provided the answer in the bottom half of the inning, hitting a fastball deep over the left field fence off Stanford closer AJ Vanegas to put the Trojans ahead 7-6.

The Cardinal got on the board right away in top of the first with an unearned run, jumping ahead 1-0.

The Trojans answered with a 3-spot in the bottom of the second, benefitting from a leadoff walk, two hit batters and a Stanford error. The first run came across when right fielder Bobby Stahel (Needles, Calif./Palos Verdes ) was hit with the bases loaded. Second baseman Adam Landecker (Calabasas, Calif./Calabasas HS) followed with a two-run double to put the Trojans ahead 3-1.

Trojan starter Kyle Twomey (Placentia, Calif./El Dorado HS), who surrendered only the one unearned run in through the first three innings but ran into trouble in the fourth, surrendering a leadoff home run and a second run on a walk that came around to score, but he settled down to work out of the jam and keep the score tied. Twomey ended up going six complete, giving up three runs (two earned) on nine hits and a pair of walks while striking out a pair. He did not factor into the decision.

The Trojans broke the tie in the home half of the fifth, as Kevin Swick (La Canada, Calif./Loyola HS) drew a leadoff walk, and Blake Lacey (Clovis, Calif./Clovis HS) followed with a single up the middle. Both advanced on a wild pitch, and Greg Zebrack (Northridge, Calif./UPenn) scored Swick and moved Lacey up with a sac fly. Jake Hernandez (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif./Los Osos HS) followed with a pinch-hit single to plate Lacey and came around to score on back-to-back singles from Garrett Stubbs (Del Mar, Calif./Torrey Pines HS) and Timmy Robinson (Huntington Beach, Calif./Ocean View HS), putting the score at 6-3 Trojans.

Freshman Kyle Davis (Garden Grove, Calif./Pacifica HS)relieved Twomey with a 1-2-3 seventh but ran into trouble in the eighth, as Stanford tied the game with three straight singles and a triple before Roberts gave the Trojans the lead in the bottom half of the inning. Davis worked around a pair of singles in the top of the ninth to put up a zero and pick up the win. He finished with three runs (all earned) on six hits.

The Trojans return to action Tuesday night, as they visit Cal State Fullerton at 6 p.m. PT.
