USC Wins Series At Arizona With 7-3 Victory
April 5, 2009
TUCSON, Arizona - Junior right-hander Robert Stock (Westlake Village/Agoura HS) threw his first complete game Sunday as the USC Trojans defeated the Arizona Wildcats, 7-3, to win the Pac-10 Conference series, two games to one. Stock threw USC's first complete game of the season, allowing three runs on six hits with three walks and seven strikeouts.
After Stock allowed three runs in the first two innings, he held the Wildcats scoreless through the final seven innings during which time no Arizona runner reached second base. Anthony Vasquez went 4-for-5 at the plate with one RBI for USC (13-14, 4-5) while Grant Green, Hector Rabago and Brandon Garcia had two hits each.
Shaun Cooper was 2-for-4 with two RBI for Arizona (13-14, 2-7). UA starter Donn Roach took the loss after giving up seven runs on 10 hits in 3 2/3 innings.
The Trojans put runners at first and third with two outs in the top of the first. Roach caught Vasquez off first base as Green tried to score from third on the play, but first baseman Dillon Baird fired a strike to Dwight Childs at the plate and applied the tag on the collision for the third out.
Brad Glenn was hit by a Stock pitch in the first and Baird walked before Cooper delivered the two-run double to left center, giving Arizona the early 2-0 lead.
The Trojans used RBI doubles from freshmen Brandon Garcia and Alex Sherrod to tie the game in the second, but the Wildcats retook the lead in the bottom of the second with a run on a Childs' RBI single after Rafael Valenzuela doubled to lead off the inning.
In the fourth, the Trojans sent 10 batters to the plate and scored five runs to retake the lead, 7-3. Ricky Oropesa and Garcia singled to lead off the inning. Billy Pinkerton tried to bunt, but on a two-strike count, he swung away and sailed a two-run double past the drawn-in Glenn in left. Sherrod moved Pinkerton to third on a groundout and Joe De Pinto hit an infield single. Mike O'Neill scored Pinkerton with a single to right and Vasquez capped the scoring with an RBI single.
USC returns home to face Cal State Northridge in a nonconference game on Tuesday (April 7) at 6:30 p.m. before hosting Oregon in a Pac-10 Conference series, Thursday-Saturday (April 9-11).
