BERKELEY, Calif. - Left-hander Justin Jones struck out 12 batters Saturday as the No. 13 California Golden Bears defeated the USC Trojans, 9-2, in Pac-10 Conference action. Jones threw his first complete game of the season, allowing two runs (one earned) on seven hits and posted just one walk to even the weekend series.

Devon Rodriguez went 4-for-5 for the Golden Bears (18-6, 4-1) with a home run and three RBI. Vince Bruno, Chadd Krist and Mitch Delfino had two hits each.

Cal knocked out USC starter Austin Wood with a six-run first inning as Wood lasted just two-thirds of an inning. He gave up six runs (four earned) on four hits while hitting two batters for the Trojans (10-17, 2-3).

Wood hit Marcus Semien and Tony Renda in back-to-back at-bats before Krist started the scoring with an RBI singled to left. Rodriguez and Delfino followed with back-to-back singles. Darrel Matthews then hit a grounder to Trojan first baseman Ricky Oropesa. In an attempt for a double play, Oropesa's throw to second pulled James Roberts off the bag at second as the error allowed Rodriguez to score. Danny Oh laid down a sacrifice bunt to score Delfino for the fifth run and Matthews scored the final run of the inning when he stole home after Austin Booker broke for second on Bruno's at-bat with Matthews able to beat the throw home.

Back-to-back wild pitches by Ryan Cabral in the third allowed Bruno to score from second for the 7-0 lead in the third. Matt Foat collected two RBI for the Trojans with a ground out in the fourth and single in the sixth for USC's only runs in the game. Garret Houts went 3-for-4 with a double while Kevin Roundtree was 2-for-3 with a double.

Jones finished his effort by striking out Houts and J.R. Aguirre to close it out in the ninth.

The series concludes with the rubber game of the series tomorrow at 1 p.m. The game will be broadcast, along with Gametracker live stats, on usctrojans.com.

Note: Ricky Oropesa was hitless today after going 3-for-5 yesterday with two homers and five RBI.
