No. 21 Oregon State Wins 4-1 In 10 Innings|
April 1, 2010
LOS ANGELES - Parker Berberet's RBI single with two outs in the top of the 10th inning was the game-winner Thursday as the No. 21 Oregon State Beavers beat the USC Trojans, 4-1, to take the first game of a Pac-10 Conference series at Dedeaux Field. Rob Folsom followed with a two-run double as the Beavers scored three times in the extra frame.
Oregon State improved to 17-5 on the season and 1-0 in Pac-10 play while USC evened its overall mark to 13-13, dropping to 1-3 in conference.
Kevin Rhoderick (1-1) threw 1 1/3 scoreless innings in relief to earn the win for the Beavers. OSU starter Greg Peavey went seven innings, giving up just one run on three hits with three walks and 10 strikeouts.
Joe De Pinto and Matt Hart had two hits each for the Trojans. Kevin Couture and Chad Smith combined to strike out 16 batters with Smith (1-4) throwing a career-high nine strikeouts in five innings of relief, allowing three runs and only one walk. Couture allowed one run on five hits with three walks and seven strikeouts.
De Pinto hit a one-run double to left in the third for the Trojans, advancing to third on a Peavey wild pitch. After Taylor Wrenn struck out for the second out, De Pinto stole home successfully to give USC the 1-0 lead.
In the top of the sixth, Danny Hayes and Stefan Romero recorded infield singles. Berberet then placed a perfect bunt past Couture to load the bases with no outs. Couture struck out Rob Folsom, but pinch-hitter Dylan Jones singled to left to make it a 1-1 tie. The Trojans got out of the jam when Keith Jeannette hit a line drive to right fielder Alex Sherrod, who threw a one-hop strike to the plate as Kevin Roundtree applied the tag for the 9-3 double play.
Kraig Sitton allowed a one-out single to Hart in the bottom of the ninth and an errant pickoff attempt pushed Hart to second base. Rhoderick entered the game with two outs to face pinch-hitter Keith Castillo, who hit a ground ball to the right side that Jennette smothered and threw to first for the game-saving out.
Adalberto Santos walked in the 10th and pinch-hitter Matt Boyd singled for runners at first and second. Romero struck out for the second out and Berberet worked Smith to a full count before blooping the game-winning single to center. Roundtree singled to right to lead off the USC half of the 10th, but the Beavers were able to turn a crucial 5-4-3 double play on their way to the win.
The series continues tomorrow at 7 p.m. with a 1 p.m. series finale on Saturday. Both games will be broadcast live through a video webcast on usctrojans.com.
Notes: Joe De Pinto was the last Trojan to steal home (not a double steal) as he did so last year on May 23 at California...the 16 strikeouts for Kevin Couture and Chad Smith is a season-high (previous team high was 11, twice)...Smith tied the most strikeouts by a Trojan pitcher this season (Andrew Triggs vs. New Mexico, March 5)...Parker Berberet's sister, Nicole, played three seasons for the USC women's basketball team (2006-07 through 2008-09).
