March 29, 2008
TEMPE, Ariz. - The No. 1 Arizona State Sun Devils used a seven-run second inning Saturday for the 13-5 Pac-10 victory over the USC Trojans at Packard Stadium. ASU (24-1, 2-0) used 19 hits tonight to take the first two games of the series after last night's 16-5 victory.
Rocky Laguna went 3-for-3 with two RBI while Petey Paramore and Kiel Roling also had three hits for the Sun Devils. Matt Newman hit a two-run homer in the second as ASU recorded eight hits to knock out USC starter Kevin Couture, who allowed eight runs in 1 2/3 innings.
The Trojans took the lead with a run in the first after Lopez doubled and scored on Perren's RBI single. ASU answered with a run in the bottom half of the first. With runners at first and third and two outs, the Sun Devils tried to run a delayed steal. Robert Stock fired a throw to the bag at second and Grant Green threw it right back as Stock applied the tag on Brett Wallace, who was immediately ejected after arguing the call.
Mike Leake (6-0) responded by striking out the side in the USC second. Leake allowed five runs on 10 hits in seven innings of work with no walks and six strikeouts.
After Couture hit Marcel Champagnie with a pitch to lead off the second, Newman blasted his first home run of the season to start the big inning. ASU then used four straight singles to break the game open as Roling later hit an RBI triple with 12 Sun Devil players coming to the plate.
In the sixth, Perren and senior Mike Roskopf (Prescott, Arizona) hit back-to-back solo homers off Leake.
The series concludes tomorrow at 1 p.m. with a live audio broadcast on usctrojans.com.
