Trojans Top Anteaters 5-4|

IRVINE, Calif. - The USC Baseball team, fueled by Garrett Stubbs first homerun as a Trojan, defeated UC Irvine 5-4 at Anteater Ballpark Wednesday night. The Trojans improve to 15-8 on the season while UCI falls to 14-9.
The Anteaters got on the board early as Jordan Fox tripled to right center off Brandon Garcia to score D.J. Crumlich from first. Jeff Stephens then reached on a slow chopper to a charging Adam Landecker to plate Tommy Reyes from third. With the bases loaded, Garcia struck out Kris Paulino and Dillon Moyer to limit the damage at 2-0.
USC's offense came to life in the third when senior Garret Houts tripled to right center off Mitch Merten to score James Roberts who had singled to lead off the inning. Stubbs followed with a two-run shot to right to give the Trojans a 3-2 lead.
In the bottom of the third, with runners in scoring position, Garcia departed for sophomore lefty Bobby Wheatley who caught fox in a 1-6-2 rundown and got Paulino to pop out to get out of the inning.
UCI evened up the game in the fourth when Roberts couldn't handle a grounder off the bat of Ramirez and allowed Tommy Reyes to score. Sophomore Matt Munson (2-0) stepped in to strike out Sparks ending the inning and picking the eventual win.
Garcia, remaining in the game as the designated hitter, singled to left in the sixth to score Matt Foat and reclaim the lead for the Trojans. Dante Flores singled to deep short to plate Kevin Roundtree for the 5-3 advantage. Houts and Stubbs both struck out with the bases loaded to end the inning.
The `Eaters rallied again in the seventh when Christian Ramirez tripled to right scoring Jeff Stephens from first cutting the Trojan lead to 5-4 but they would get no closer.
Senior Martin Viramontes came on in relief in the eighth and tossed two scoreless innings to pick up his third save of the season.
Landecker and Roberts each had three hits in tonight's game.
USC returns to action March 30 at Washington State as they begin a weekend series with the Cougars.
