LOS ANGELES - Matt Whitehouse threw 4 2/3 scoreless innings in his start Tuesday as the UC Irvine Anteaters shut out the USC Trojans, 4-0, in non-conference action at Dedeaux Field. Whitehouse combined with three other pitchers as the Trojans were shut out for the second time in three games.
UC Irvine improved to 15-6 overall while USC fell to 9-16 on the season.
Brian Hernandez collected two RBI for the Anteaters while Jordan Leyland went 2-for-4. Jimmy Litchfield threw two scoreless innings to close out the game. Garret Houts led the Trojans with two hits.
Christian Ramirez led off the UCI third with a walk off USC starter Kyle Richter. Ramirez advanced to second when reliever Chris Mezger was called for a balk and reached third on D.J. Crumlich's ground ball to the right side. Hernandez then lifted a sacrifice fly to right, plating Ramirez for the first run. Whitehouse kept the Trojans off balance, retiring 14 of the first 15 batters he faced.
Leyland's RBI single made it a 2-0 lead in the sixth and the Anteaters added two more runs in the seventh with two outs on an RBI single from Hernandez and a double by Drew Hillman.
