LOS ANGELES - Matt Thayer's two-run triple in the third provided the go-ahead runs as the UCLA Bruins defeated the USC Trojans, 13-7, in nonconference action at Dedeaux Field. The Bruins averted a series sweep and snapped an 11-game losing streak at Dedeaux Field with their last win coming on May 2, 1999.

Thayer went 3-for-6 on the afternoon with a double, a triple and three RBI while second baseman Mike Svetlic went 2-for-5 with a double and five RBI. It was the final game at Dedeaux Field for UCLA head coach Gary Adams, who is retiring at the end of the season after 30 years.

Brant Rustich (2-0) was credited with the win, allowing three runs in two innings while Brian Schroeder earned his second save of the season with 2 2/3 scoreless innings. Schroeder entered the game in the seventh with the bases loaded, but forced USC catcher Jeff Clement to ground out into a 4-6-3 double play to end the threat.

The Trojans got to within three runs in the fourth, but Bruin shortstop Ryan McCarthy made a great play on a ground ball by Baron Frost with the bases loaded to end the inning.

Trojan starter Bobby Paschal (2-4) took the loss after allowing seven runs (six earned) on seven hits in 3 1/3 innings. Senior designated hitter Jon Brewster extended his current hitting streak to 11 games with a 2-for-4 performance while Blake Sharpe and Joey Metropoulos also had two-hit days for the Trojans.

In the top of the fourth, first baseman Brett McMillan singled and third baseman Brandon Averill walked. Left fielder Anthony Norman attempted a sacrifice bunt, but Paschal's throw to third to retire McMillan was high and loaded the bases for the Bruins. Catcher Chris Denove hit a two-run double to left for a 5-1 lead, followed by a Chad Concolino sacrifice fly and RBI double by Thayer made it a four-run fourth. UCLA broke the game open with five runs in the fifth.
