STANFORD, Calif. - The USC baseball team (14-8, 2-4) bounced back from a tough doubleheader sweep to defeat the No. 2 Stanford Cardinal (15-3, 3-1) 8-4 Monday evening at Sunken Diamond in Palo Alto.

Freshman Stephen Tarpley improved to 4-0 on the season after allowing only two runs in 6.1 innings against a potent Cardinal lineup.

The Trojans capitalized on Stanford's mistakes early and often as senior Garret Houts scored on a throwing error from shortstop Lonnie Kauppila after opening the game with a lead-off double. Kevin Roundtree then scored Kevin Swick with an RBI single to center to put USC up 2-0. Freshman Garrett Stubbs kept the runs coming with a two-RBI triple to right field before scoring himself on a passed ball to give USC a 5-0 lead. While all five runs were unearned, starter John Hochstatter would depart in the second inning and take the loss, falling to 3-2 on the season.

Senior Garret Houts played a phenomenal game in right field for the Trojans with six put outs. In the bottom of the first, Houts ranged 35 yards to his left to make a sliding over the shoulder grab and rob Stephen Piscotty of an extra base hit.

Stanford chipped away at the lead with two RBI singles in the second to make the score 5-2, where it would remain until the eighth inning.

With runners on second and third, Austin Wilson delivered a two-run single up the middle to tighten the game at 5-4. Senior Brad Douthit came in to retire Brian Guymon and Wyatt Strahan got Alex Blandino to pop up to work out of the jam. Strahan would stay on to pick up his second save of the season with 1.1 scoreless innings of work.

USC would add three more insurance runs in the ninth as Dante Flores started things by scoring from third on a wild pitch by Sam Lindquist. Adam Landecker scored on a throwing error to third by catcher Brant Whiting and Matt Foat would score on a fielder's choice RBI from Brandon Garcia.

Strahan then capped the game with a hitless ninth inning to secure the win for the Trojans.

Foat and Roundtree each had two hits in the game while Stubbs added two RBI's.

USC returns to action Wednesday with a 6:30 road contest at UC Irvine.
