Trojans Complete Series Sweep with 4-2 Midweek Victory Over Loyola Marymount
March 25, 2014
LOS ANGELES - The USC baseball team took a lead in the third inning and never looked back, taking care of Loyola Marymount on Tuesday evening at Page Stadium, 4-2.
The Trojans jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the third inning with a two-out rally. Catcher Garrett Stubbs (Del Mar, Calif./Torrey Pines HS) started the rally with a single up the middle. Center fielder Timmy Robinson (Huntington Beach, Calif./Ocean View HS) followed with a single of his own to put two on for the hot-hitting Kevin Swick (La Canada, Calif./Loyola HS), who singled up the middle to put the Trojans up 1-0. The Trojans then executed a double steal, with Robinson stealing home to put the Trojans up 2-0, while Swick took second. That set the table for AJ Ramirez (Bakersfield, Calif./Bakersfield Christian HS) who delivered a triple to deep right center to give the Trojans the 3-0 lead.
The Trojans added to that lead in the fifth when Jeremy Martinez (Fountain Valley, Calif./Mater Dei HS) was hit by the pitch from Lions reliever Tim Peabody, who had loaded the bases with an intentional walk of Dante Flores (Norwalk, Calif./St. John Bosco HS) in the previous at bat.
The Lions got one run on the board in the bottom of the fifth inning, and with two outs and runners on the corners, Trojan starter Brent Wheatley (Villa Park, Calif./Orange Lutheran HS) was pulled after a strong start in favor of lefty reliever Sean Adler (Northridge, Calif./Sierra Canyon HS), who recorded the final out of the inning to end the threat.
The Lions added one more run in the sixth inning with a sacrifice fly to make the score 4-2 Trojans.
Reliever Brooks Kriske (Palm Desert, Calif./Palm Desert HS) came through for the Trojans in a big spot in the bottom of the seventh innings. He entered with one on and one out. Another single with two outs put runners on the corners for the Lions. Pinch hitter Kevin Garcia came to the plate and Kriske came up with a big strikeout to end the Lions threat, his second strikeout of the inning.
Right-handed reliever James Guillen (Covina, Calif./Damien HS) had a two-inning save for the Trojans, his first of the season. The senior pitched around a leadoff single in the bottom of the ninth, inducing a double play and getting a groundout to preserve the 4-2 victory.
The Trojans return to Dedeaux Field to continue Pac-12 play on Friday as they host Washington in a three game series, beginning on Friday, March 28 at 6 p.m. PT.
