USC Baseball: Trojans Complete Dramatic Come-from-Behind Victory to Defeat Stanford 6-3 in 10 Innings
March 23, 2014
STANFORD, Calif. - USC baseball continued its tendency for dramatic comeback victories in extra innings on the road on Sunday afternoon as they defeated Stanford 6-3 in 10 innings.
Freshman Jeremy Martinez (Fountain Valley, Calif./Mater Dei HS) came through with a big one-out double right past the diving Cardinal third baseman to plate the go-ahead run. Martinez also came through with a sacrifice fly in the eighth inning to pull the Trojans within one.
The Trojan offense was held down though the first five frames, as Cardinal starter Viall held the Trojans hitless. The freshman righty only allowed one run on one hit, as sophomore slugger Vahn Bozoian (Chino Hills, Calif./Ayala HS) connected on his third home run of the season, a solo shot to deep left field to put the Trojans on the board in the top of the sixth, 3-1.
Sophomore lefty Kyle Twomey (Placentia, Calif./El Dorado HS) was stellar in 5.2 innings of relief, keeping the Trojans in the game after the Cardinal took an early 3-0 lead through the first two innings. Twomey allowed the Cardinal just two hits and struck out three.
Just like on Friday, the Trojan hitters were able to get to the Cardinal bullpen in the late innings. In the eighth inning sophomore Blake Lacey (Clovis, Calif./Clovis HS) led off the inning with a big double to put the Trojans in business off reliever Tyler Thorne. He then advanced to third on a wild pitch. After Bozoian drew a walk to put runners on the corners, Thorne was lifted for new Cardinal reliever Logan James. Junior Garrett Stubbs (Del Mar, Calif./Torrey Pines HS) was hit by the first pitch James threw to load the bases. Martinez drove in the second run of the day with a sac fly to right field. The runner also advanced from second on the fly out, allowing Robinson to come through with a sac fly of his own to tie the game 3-3.
Sophomore right-hander Kyle Davis (Garden Grove, Calif./Pacifica HS) entered to put up big zeroes in the eighth and ninth innings to send the game to extras.
In the top of the 10th, Jake Hernandez (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif./Los Osos HS) led off the inning with a big double to right center. That prompted the Cardinal to go back to the bullpen, this time for Marcus Brakeman, who the Trojans had success against on Friday. Reggie Southall (Gardena, Calif./Serra HS) sacrificed Hernandez to third. Stubbs drew a walk to put runners on the corners for Martinez. Martinez drove the 0-1 pitch past the diving third baseman to plate the go-ahead run. With two on and one out, Robinson laid down the squeeze to put the Trojans up 5-3. Finally, Kevin Swick (La Canada, Calif./Loyola HS) got in on the action, driving the Trojans first single of the day through the left side to plate the sixth run of the day.
The Cardinal made it interesting in the bottom of the 10th inning, putting two on with no outs to bring the tying run to the plate. However, a fielder's choice followed by a 6-4-3 double play ended the game, as Davis took the victory for the Trojans.
USC will be back in action in southern California on Tuesday as they travel to Loyola Marymount for a 6 p.m. game on Tuesday, March 25.
