SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - The No. 8 USC Trojans picked up right where they left off on Sunday afternoon, jumping out to a 7-0 lead through the first two innings and never looked back, defeating Cal Poly 9-2 to take the series, 2-1, at Baggett Stadium.
The Trojans (19-5) scored nine runs on 12 hits, as freshman right-handed starter Mitch Hart (Granite Bay, Calif./Granite Bay HS) took care of business on the hill, throwing seven solid innings on four-hit, one-run ball to earn his fifth win of the season.
The Trojans jumped on the Mustangs (7-13) early, as Bobby Stahel (Needles, Calif./Palos Verdes HS) led off the top of the first inning with a double off the wall in left center and Garrett Stubbs (Del Mar, Calif./Torrey Pines HS) followed with a double of his own to put the Trojans up 1-0. Timmy Robinson (Huntington Beach, Calif./Ocean View HS) then singled to bring home Stubbs and put the Trojans up 2-0. Blake Lacey (Clovis, Calif./Clovis HS) singled to bring home the third run of the inning and David Oppenheim (Mercer Island, Calif./College of the Canyons) got in on the hit parade with an RBI double to push the Trojans lead to 4-0.
The Trojans added to their lead with three more runs in the top of the second, as Reggie Southall (Inglewood, Calif./Serra HS) led things off with a double of his own. Southall advanced to third on a wild pitch and then came home of Stubbs' second double of the day. The Trojans added two more runs as they took advantage of an error by new Mustang pitcher Michael Gomez who couldn't hold onto the feed at first on a bouncing ground ball to the first baseman Brian Mundell from Dante Flores (Norwalk, Calif./St. John Bosco HS).
With the score 7-0, the Mustangs got on the board in the bottom of the third inning, as Brett Barbier connected of a solo home run to left field.
The Trojans added two more runs in the fifth inning, as Lacey led off with a double and advanced to third on on infield single from AJ Ramirez (Phoenix, Ariz./Bakersfield Christian HS). Southall brought home Lacey on a fielder's choice. Southall stole second with two down, and came around to score on a triple to right field by Stahel. Stahel looked to have an inside the park home run, but as he came home, he didn't slide and ran into Mustang catcher Barbier. Stahel was out 9-4-2 and was thrown out of the game on an interference call.
Mason Perryman (Bakersfield, Calif./Bakersfield HS) put up a zero in the bottom of the eighth and closer Kyle Davis (Garden Grove, Calif./Pacifica HS) threw the ninth to get some work in. With two down, Ryan Drobny doubled off the wall in right center to plate the second and final run for the Mustangs.
The Trojans return to Dedeaux Field to face Pepperdine at 6 p.m. PT on Tuesday before traveling to Seattle to face Washington in a three-game Pac-12 series starting Friday.
