March 15, 2011
LOS ANGELES - Junior right fielder Alex Sherrod (Marietta, Ga.) went 2-for-3 with a home run and three RBI Tuesday as the USC Trojans beat the Louisville Cardinals, 4-3, in the first game of a 10-game homestand at Dedeaux Field. The Trojans (6-10) have won three of their last four games.
Brandon Garcia earned his first win on the year with 5 1/3 innings, giving up one run on five hits with three walks and three strikeouts. Chad Smith recorded his third save on the year with 1 1/3 no-hit innings as he struck out Ty Young to end the game in the ninth as Louisville (11-4) had the tying run at second.
Gabriel Shaw took the loss for the Cardinals by allowing four runs on five hits in three innings. Jeff Thompson threw four scoreless innings in relief while Cade Stallings went 2-for-3 with two doubles and two RBI.
Ricky Oropesa singled home Kevin Roundtree in the first for USC. Joe De Pinto singled Oropesa to third, who then scored on Sherrod's sacrifice fly for the 2-0 lead. In the third, Sherrod hammered his third home run of the season with the two-run shot off the scoreboard in right center.
Sherrod would showcase his defensive skills in the top of the fourth, throwing out Ryan Seiz at the plate for the third out of the inning as Seiz tried to score from second on a single by Alex Crittenden. Louisville scored two runs in the sixth and one in the eighth, but that was as close as they would get as Smith struck out J.J. Ethel to finish off the eighth inning.
USC plays Louisville in the second game of the two-game series tomorrow with a 3 p.m. start before a three-game series this weekend against Pacific. Tomorrow's game will be broadcast live through a video webcast, along with Gametracker live stats, on usctrojans.com.
Notes: Alex Sherrod has all of USC's three home runs this season...Chad Smith now has a 1.74 ERA in 10 1/3 innings with opponents hitting just .167 against him.
