    March 14, 1998

LOS ANGELES - USC senior LF Jeremy Freitas doubled home the winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning to lead the No. 3 Trojans to a 7-6 victory over No. 7 Arizona State in the first game of a doubleheader, then senior 3B Morgan Ensberg slugged two home runs and had six RBI as the Trojans also won the second game of the twinbill, 13-5, in Pacific-10 Conference Southern Division games on Saturday at Dedeaux Field.

With the doubleheader sweep, USC improved to 18-5 overall and 6-2 in the Six-Pac. Arizona State fell to 16-9, 5-5.

In the first game, the Trojans were behind, 4-2, in the bottom of the sixth until junior RF Brad Ticehurst hit a three-run home run, and senior C Jeff DePippo followed with a solo shot as USC took a 6-4 lead.

The Sun Devils rallied in the top of the ninth as freshman DH Casey Myers hit a two-run single to tie the game, 6-6.

In the bottom of the ninth, ASU got the first two outs before junior 1B Robb Gorr and Ensberg were both hit by pitches, and Freitas followed with a line drive down the right-field line that scored Gorr and won the game.

USC senior RHP Jack Krawczyk (1-1) got the win in relief. USC senior RHP Seth Etherton did not get a decision, the first time in 12 starts he did not earn the victory. ASU senior RHP Aaron Kramer (2-2) took the loss in relief.

In the second game, the Trojans hit two grand slams and senior RHP Mike Penney (5-1) threw the first nine-inning complete game of his career, giving up eight hits, three earned runs and three walks while striking out two.

Ensberg hit a solo home run in the bottom of the first, then hit a grand slam in the bottom of the fifth to give the Trojans a 7-3 lead. In the second game, he was 3-for-3 with a double, two home runs and a career-high six RBI.

The Trojans scored six more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning as Freitas hit a grand slam.

ASU starting LHP Phill Lowery (4-3) took the loss.

The Trojans were without preseason All-American Eric Munson, who was hit above the eye with a foul ball during batting practice on Friday. Junior CF Greg Hanoian sprained a shoulder in the second inning of the first game and did not return.

USC also hosts Arizona State on Sunday at Dedeaux Field at 1 p.m.
