LOS ANGELES - The USC baseball team came through with a big win on Tuesday night, defeating visiting Loyola Marymount 6-1 at Dedeaux Field.

Trojan starter Brent Wheatley (Villa Park, Calif./Orange Lutheran HS) settled in after giving up an unearned run in the top of the second inning, going five complete innings to get the win. The sophomore held the Lions, who came into the day riding a seven-game win streak, to just six hits while striking out three and walking one.

At the plate, the Trojans tallied their six runs on 12 hits. Catcher Garrett Stubbs (Del Mar, Calif./Torrey Pines HS) led the team with a 3-for-4 day at the plate as he drove home two runs. Kevin Swick (La Canada, Calif./Loyola HS), Vahn Bozoian (Chino Hills, Calif./Ayala HS) and AJ Ramirez (Bakersfield, Calif./Bakersfield Christian HS) each had two hits on the day.

The Trojans countered the Lions' early 1-0 lead with two runs of their own in the bottom of the fourth inning. Ramirez led off the inning with a single and designated hitter Jeremy Martinez (Fountain Valley, Calif./Mater Dei HS) drew a walk to put two on with no outs. After a sacrifice bunt advanced the runners 90 feet, a new Lion pitcher, Tim Peabody entered in relief. He was able to get the force out at home for the second out of the inning, but a single from Stubbs brought home the two runs and gave the 2-1 lead that the Trojans would never relinquish.

Second baseman Dante Flores (Norwalk, Calif./St. John Bosco HS) busted the game open for the Trojans in the seventh inning, as he blasted a bases-clearing double to left field with one out to put the Trojans up 5-1. Bozoian piled it on in the inning with a two-out double of his own to score Flores from second and give the Trojans the 6-1 that the bullpen would preserve to end the team's losing streak.
