    March 7, 1998

LOS ANGELES - The No. 2 USC baseball team scored three runs each in the fifth and sixth innings, and sophomore catcher Eric Munson and junior designated hitter Jason Lane each homered to lead the Trojans to a 7-4 victory over Oregon State in a nonconference game on Saturday afternoon at Dedeaux Field.

The Trojans improved to 16-4 overall, while the Beavers fell to 6-5-1.

With the score tied 1-1 and the bases loaded in the third inning, the Beavers took the lead on an error by USC freshman shortstop Seth Davidson that allowed junior second baseman Corrie Willkie to score the go ahead run. Oregon State would tack on another run in the inning on a sacrifice fly by sophomore designated hitter Joe Gerber for a 3-1 lead.

The Trojans would strike back in a big way in the fifth inning. With one out, Davidson was hit by a pitch and then stole second base. Freshman centerfielder Rod Perry Jr.singled to left field, scoring Davidson, and later scored to tie the game on a sacrifice bunt by junior rightfielder Greg Hanoian. Senior second baseman Wes Rachels, who singled to right field, scored the game-winning run on an infield single by junior first baseman Robb Gorr giving USC a 4-3 lead.

USC scored three more runs in the sixth inning sparked by Munson's lead off home run to right field, his eighth of the season. Two Oregon State errors contributed to the Trojans final two runs in the inning to give USC a 7-3 lead.

The Beavers added a run in the eighth inning on a sacrifice fly by sophomore shortstop Brian Duerr that scored senior third baseman Ryan Lipe to close the gap to 7-4.

USC junior righthander Mike Penney (4-1) got the win for the Trojans, going 5 2/3 innings and allowing only one earned run while striking out five. Oregon State senior righthander Andrew Checketts (3-1) took the loss. Senior righthander Jack Krawczyk pitched the ninth inning for his seventh save of the season.

USC and Oregon State finish their three-game series on Sunday at noon.
