    Oregon State Baseball Defeats No. 2 USC, 13-6

    LOS ANGELES - The Oregon State baseball team, behind 13 hits and aseason-high five USC errors, defeated the No. 2 Trojans, 13-6, in anonconference game on Sunday afternoon at Dedeaux Field.

    It was the third straight weekend that USC (16-5) won the first two gamesof the series (9-0 on Friday and 7-4 on Saturday) but failed to completethe sweep on Sunday. Oregon State improved to 7-5-1.

    It was Oregon State's first win against USC since 1967, ending a 12-gamelosing streak to the Trojans. Prior to this weekend, the two schools hadnot met since 1977.

    The Beavers got a solid outing from senior LHP Brody Percell (1-2), whowent seven innings and gave up eight hits, six runs (only three earned) andone walk while striking out eight. Junior LHP Jason Saenz (1-2) lasted only1 2/3 innings and took the loss for USC.

    The Beavers jumped on top early, scoring seven runs in the top of thesecond inning on four hits, a walk, a hit batsman and an error. Junior LFGreg Conley led off with a double, junior DH Troy Schader walked andsophomore SS Brian Duerr knocked a two-run double down the left-field line.Duerr ended up scoring on a Trojan error. Later in the inning, senior 1BMatt Bailie had an RBI single, knocking Saenz out of the game, and senior CBen Bertrand followed with a three-run home run.

    USC came back with four runs in the bottom of the second. Senior 3B MorganEnsberg and junior DH Jason Lane both singled, and after an out, junior RFBrad Ticehurst slugged a three-run home run high over the right field wall.Freshman CF Rod Perry doubled off the right-center field wall and went tothird when the right fielder fumbled the ball. Perry then scored on astraight steal of home.

    The Trojans had trouble keeping the Beavers off the basepaths, though, andOregon State added one run in the fourth inning, two in the fifth and twoin the seventh to make it 12-4. USC junior 1B Robb Gorr hit a two-run homerun in the bottom of the seventh, but that was it for USC.

    Oregon State junior RF Rob Colley, who was 3-for-5, got his third RBI ofthe day on a run-scoring single in the top of the ninth.

    USC returns to Pacific-10 Conference Southern Division play next weekend(March 13-15) when it hosts Arizona State for a three-game series.
