Trojan Bats Lead The Way In 9-2 Win At Winthrop
March 8, 2008
ROCK HILL, S.C. - Senior Roberto Lopez (La Mesa/Rancho Bernardo HS) led off the game with a home run as part of a 3-for-5 day Saturday as the USC Trojans took their second straight game over the host Winthrop Eagles with the 9-2 decision. Lopez's leadoff homer started a five-run first inning as the Trojans knocked out WU starter Billy Tinsley after he allowed five runs on six hits.
USC (8-4) banged out a season-high 17 hits on the afternoon as sophomore right-hander Kevin Couture (Coronado/Coronado HS) threw seven strong innings, allowing one earned run on four hits with a walk and four strikeouts.
With winds in Rock Hill gusting to 40 miles per hour, Lopez hammered a 1-1 pitch to left against the grain for his first homer of the season in the Trojan first. Nick Buss singled and stole second before scoring on Perren's single. Roskopf then blasted an RBI double to right and advanced to third on a throwing error. He scored on Rabago's single to left. Billy Pinkerton moved Rabago to third on a single and Robert Stock plated Rabago on an RBI sacrifice fly to left for the 5-0 lead.
USC added two runs in the third and a run each in the fourth and fifth innings for the commanding 9-1 advantage. Couture retired the side in order three times and induced two key double plays as the Trojans used high school teammates (St. Mark's School in Dallas, Texas) Jordan Hershiser and Philip Urso to finish the victory in relief.
The Trojans will go for the series sweep tomorrow with a noon start Eastern time. Sunday's game will be broadcast live, along with Gametracker live stats, on usctrojans.com.
