Strong Pitching Pushes USC To 5-1 Win Over Pepperdine

LOS ANGELES - Junior left-hander Anthony Vasquez (San Antonio, Texas/Texas A&M) pitched a career-long 7 2/3 innings Wednesday as the USC Trojans beat the Pepperdine Waves (ranked No. 24 in the nation by Rivals.com), 5-1, in nonconference action at Dedeaux Field. Vasquez tied a career best with seven strikeouts, allowing one run on eight hits with no walks as the Trojans snapped a five-game losing streak against the Waves.
USC improved to 6-4 on the year while Pepperdine fell to 6-3.
Senior Derek Perren (Chatsworth/Granada Hills HS/L.A. Pierce College) went 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBI while sophomore Robert Stock went 1-for-3 with a home run and struck out the side in the ninth as a relief pitcher.
Senior right fielder Roberto Lopez led off the first with a single up the middle and stole second on a delayed steal. Nick Buss hit a groundout to move him to third and shortstop Grant Green brought Lopez home with an RBI groundout to short. Perren then followed with a solo shot to right for the 2-0 USC advantage.
Pepperdine scored its lone run in the eighth to knock out Vasquez with the bases loaded. Freshman righty Ryan Cabral struck out David Harris to end the threat and help preserve the victory.
USC travels to Winthrop this weekend for a nonconference series beginning on Friday at 6 p.m. Eastern. Saturday's game is scheduled for a 2 p.m. Eastern start and a noon start on Sunday. All three games will be broadcast live on usctrojans.com.
Notes: USC beat Pepperdine for the first time since the Trojans' win in the 2005 NCAA First-Round Regional in Long Beach to advance to the NCAA Super Regional...Robert Lopez extended his career-best hitting streak to nine games with a 2-for-4 performance tonight...Lopez is batting .459 (17-for-37) for the Trojans this season.
