Pepperdine Beats USC, 10-5, In Malibu

MALIBU, Calif. - Designated hitter Matt Aidem went 2-for-4 with a home run and four RBI Tuesday as the Pepperdine Waves (ranked No. 24 in the nation by Rivals.com) defeated the USC Trojans, 10-5, in nonconference action at Eddy D. Field Stadium. The Waves won for the fifth straight time against the Trojans.
Matt Bywater improved to 2-0 on the season for Pepperdine (6-2) after allowing just two runs in seven innings. He scattered eight hits with two walks and six strikeouts. The top four batters in the Waves' lineup (Bryce Mendonca,, Aidem, Chase d'Arnaud and Eric Thames) collected two hits each.
Senior left fielder Roberto Lopez (La Mesa/Rancho Bernardo HS) went 3-for-5 with a double for the Trojans.
In the top of the first, Lopez singled to left before being forced at second as Anthony Vasquez reached on the fielder's choice. Grant Green hit an infield single for runners at first and second with both runners advancing on Nick Buss' groundout. Derek Perren drew the two-out walk to load the bases and Rabago came through with a two-run single to center for the 2-0 USC lead.
After the Waves put a run on the board in the first, Aidem put Pepperdine ahead for good with a three-run homer in the second, all with two outs. Thames put the Waves up by eight runs with a three-run shot off freshman reliever Danny Beck in the sixth.
USC attempted a comeback with three runs in the eighth, but Keven Inman struck out Lopez for the final out with the bases loaded. The Trojans were able to load them again in the ninth before Nick Gaudi picked up his third save of the season as Rabago grounded into a 3-6-1 double play for the final out.
Both teams will play again tomorrow night with a 6 p.m. game at Dedeaux Field. The game will be broadcast live (audio only) with Gametracker live stats on usctrojans.com.
Notes: Roberto Lopez extended his current hitting streak to a career-high eight games (his previous best was four games)...he is batting .469 (15-for-32) during the streak with six runs scored and six RBI...freshman right-hander Jordan Hershiser (Dallas, Texas/St. Mark's School) made his collegiate debut today and threw two scoreless innings...with three runs in the eighth, the Trojans have now scored 21 of their 64 runs on the season in the eighth inning...USC committed a season-high four errors in the game.
