Trojans Pound Out Season-High 14 Hits En Route to 9-1 Victory at Fresno State|
March 1, 2013
FRESNO, Calif. - The Trojans pounced on the Fresno State Bulldogs and never look back, pounding out a season-high 12 hits and coasting to their biggest win of the season, a 9-1 victory on Friday night at Beiden Field.
The Trojans got behind another strong start from junior lefty Bob Wheatley (Villa Park, Calif./Orange Lutheran HS), who pitched out of jams in the second and third innings, but never allowed a runner in scoring position past the third inning. He collected his first win of the season on the outing, going 7.0 innings, and allowing no runs on six hits, while striking out three and walking only one.
The Trojans started things off in the fifth with a big inning, posting three runs and never looked back. Freshman left fielder Turner Clouse (Fountain Valley, Calif./Fountain Valley HS) started things off with a one-out single, and then stole second to get in scoring position. Sophomore catcher Garrett Stubbs (Del Mar, Calif./Torrey Pines HS) worked from an 0-2 count to draw a walk. The Bulldogs' starter Will Munro started to unravel from there, hitting the next batter, Greg Zebrack (Northridge, Calif./UPenn/Campbell Hall HS) to load the bases. That set the stage for freshman second baseman Blake Lacey (Clovis, Calif./Clovis HS) to pick a good time to get his first career hit, and RBI single to put the Trojans up, 1-0. Shortstop James Roberts (Cupertino, Calif./Archbishop Mitty HS) followed with an RBI single of his own and the Trojans went up, 2-0. Finally, an RBI fielder's choice from Jake Hernandez (Rancho Cuacamonga, Calif./Los Osos HS) put the team up, 3-0.
In the seventh the Trojans struck again, this time off reliever Tyler Linehan, who entered in the top of the sixth. The Trojans took advantage of sloppy play in the field by the Bulldogs, as they had three errors and one passed ball in the inning. The Trojans scored two runs in the inning, with an RBI single to centerfield from Roberts and another RBI from Vahn Bozoian (Chino Hills, Calif./Ayala HS), who reached on a throwing error from the shortstop.
The Trojans added to their 5-0 lead in the eighth with an RBI single from Lacey, his second of the night to put the team up, 6-0.
In the top of the ninth, the Trojans piled on three more runs, as they strung together hits and saw an RBI double from Kevin Swick (La Canada, Calif./Loyola HS) and RBI singles from AJ Ramirez (Bakersfield, Calif./Bakersfield Christian HS) and Stubbs.
The Bulldogs put a run on the board in the bottom of the night, but the Trojans and their season-high 14 hits was too much for them to handle and they take the 9-1 win.
The Trojans and Bulldogs will be back out on the diamond tomorrow night for a 6:35 p.m. start at Beiden Field for game two of the series.
