March 2, 2004
IRVINE, Calif. - Josh Rummonds, Bret Butler and Ian Kennedy combined for a five-hit shutout Tuesday as the USC Trojans defeated the UC Irvine Anteaters, 2-0, in nonconference action at Anteater Ballpark. Rummonds threw six innings while Kennedy struck out the side in the ninth to earn his first collegiate save.
USC improves to 4-7 overall while UC Irvine falls to 9-3-1 on the season.
The Trojans took the lead in the fifth when Joey Metropoulos singled to left, scoring Michael Moon from second. In the top of the sixth, Daniel Perales singled to right with Baron Frost on second and a fielding error by Danny McCarthy allowed Frost to score.
UC Irvine had the bases loaded twice, but failed to score. In the Anteater second with two outs, Rummonds got catcher Jeff Werhun to fly out to end the inning. With one out in the fifth, Matt Fisher popped up and Matt Anderson grounded out to first.
In the bottom of the seventh and two outs, UC Irvine first baseman Brett Dalton doubled to right center with Werhun at first, but the Trojans used a good relay to throw out Werhun at the plate.
The Trojans will host No. 1 Stanford this weekend at Dedeaux Field, beginning on Friday (March 5) at 6 p.m. The series will continue with 1 p.m. starts on Saturday (March 6) and Sunday (March 7). All three games will be broadcast live, along with Gametracker live stats, on usctrojans.com.
