Feb. 19, 2014
LOS ANGELES - USC baseball comes through with a huge victory on Tuesday night, defeating No. 3 Cal State Fullerton 6-1 at Dedeaux Field behind a red-hot Trojan offense led by sophomore Vahn Bozoian and a pitching staff that only allowed four hits all night to the Titans.
The Trojans remain undefeated on the season as they combined for six runs on nine hits, including Bozoian's(Chino Hills, Calif./Ayala HS) second home run in as many games, this time a solo shot to left field. He led the Trojans with a 3-for-4 day, while catcher Garrett Stubbs(Del Mar, Calif./Torrey Pines HS) went 2-for-4 with two RBI.
On the mound, starter Brent Wheatley (Villa Park, Calif./Orange Lutheran HS) went four complete innings, allowing only one earned run on two hits, while striking out two. Sean Adler (Northridge, Calif./Sierra Canyon HS) entered in the bottom of the fifth with one runner on and inherited a 2-0 count. However, the sophomore came through with back-to-back strikeouts induced a fielder's choice ground out to get out of the jam. He threw three innings before giving way to senior James Guillen(Covina, Calif./Damien HS), who entered in the eighth to throw two complete shutout innings, where he did not allow a hit to close out the game.
The Trojans got on the board in the bottom of the first, jumping on freshman starter Chad Hockin, as a wild pitch plated Timmy Robinson(Huntington Beach, Calif./Ocean View HS), who led off the inning with a single.
The Titans tied things up in the top of the third inning, but the Trojans responded in a loud way in the bottom half of the inning with three runs. With two outs, Bozoian laced a single to right field, followed by another single from Jake Hernandez (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif./Los Osos HS). After Bozoian and Hernandez advanced 90 feet on a wild pitch from the starter Hockin, he was lifted in favor of reliever Phil Bickford. The tide of the inning turned after Frankie Rios(Lakewood, Calif./Long Beach Poly HS) struck out, but the ball bounced to the backstop, but back to Titan catcher Jared Deacon, who's errant throw to first allowed Rios to reach and Bozoian and Hernandez advanced to third. After Rios stole second, a single from Stubbs plated two more runs to put the Trojans ahead, 4-1.
In the fourth inning, the Trojans added on another run on a sacrifice fly from senior third baseman Kevin Swick(La Canada, Calif./Loyola HS).
After Trojan pitching put up a zero in the top of the fifth, Bozoian made things exciting as he launched a leadoff bomb, a solo shot to left field to push the Trojans lead to 6-1, where it would stay through the ninth inning.
The Trojans will be back in action at Dedeaux Field on Friday, as they begin a three-game series with North Dakota State at 6 p.m. PT.
