LOS ANGELES - Chris Kelly and Nelson Carabello hit back-to-back RBI singles in the second inning Tuesday and the Pepperdine Waves defeated the No. 8 USC Trojans, 4-1, in non-conference action at Dedeaux Field. The Trojans, who stranded 10 runners, had their winning streak snapped at four games.
James Carroll (1-0) picked up the win for the Waves (3-1) in his first appearance of the season, going five innings and allowing one run on three hits with five walks and one strikeout.
Kea Kometani registered his second save of the season after pitching in the ninth inning. Kometani gave up a leadoff single to David Gordon and walked Spencer Gordon, but retired the next three batters and struck out Michael Moon and Jon Brewster to end the game.
Bobby Paschal (0-1) got the loss despite retiring the side in four out of the five innings he pitched. He allowed two runs on three hits with a walk and six strikeouts for USC (5-3).
The Trojans left the bases loaded in the second with two outs. In the bottom of the fifth and runners at second and third, Jeff Clement hit a sacrifice fly to right to score Matt Bonovich, cutting the Pepperdine lead to 2-1. On the perfect relay from second baseman David Uribes, Michael Moon was thrown out at third to end the inning.
Cory Brightwell hit RBI singles in the sixth and eighth innings to complete the scoring for the Waves.
The Trojans travel to No. 9 Baylor this weekend for a three-game series beginning on Friday (Feb. 21) at 6 p.m. Central Time. All three games of the series will be broadcast live, along with Gametracker play-by-play, on usctrojans.com.
