No. 5 USC Gets Offensive in Victory
Baseball pounds out 15 in 16-9 victory.

HOMESTEAD, Fla. - No. 5-ranked USC pounded out 15 hits, including three home runs, and scored in every inning en route to a 16-9 victory over North Carolina Saturday night at the Homestead Sports Complex in Homestead, Fla. The matchup between USC (6-2) and North Carolina (1-2) is part of the Homestead Challenge Tournament.
Junior righthander Mike Penney went 5 and 2/3 innings and allowed four unearned runs on five hits and three walks and struck out six to pick up the win (2-1) for the Trojans.
Offensively, USC was led by outfielder Greg Hanoian, who was four-for-four with 2 RBI. Catcher Eric Munson and outfielder Jeremy Freitas added three hits apiece.
USC jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first when, with two outs, first baseman Robb Gorr reached base on third baseman Ryan Earey's error and scored on Munson's home run off Tarheel starter Ryan Snare (1-1). The Trojans have homered in all eight games this year to bring their total to 19.
North Carolina tied the score with two unearned runs in the second inning on leftfielder Richie Grimsley's two-out single to left field after Jarrett Shearin walked and Jay Madeira reached base on catcher Munson's interference.
USC broke the the 2-2 tie in the bottom of the inning when shortstop Kevin grouned into a basesloaded double play, scoring Morgan Ensberg. The Trojans then added a run in the third on Jason Lane's sacrifice fly.
USC went on to tally three runs in the fourth (including a home run by Hanoian), two runs in the fifth (on a two-run home run by Freitas), four runs in the sixth, two runs in the seventh and one run in the eighth.
USC has won the first two games of the the three game series which will conclude Sunday at noon (EST).
