Clement Provides Encore In 10-1 Win Over No. 23 South Alabama|
Feb. 15, 2003
LOS ANGELES - Freshman catcher Jeff Clement (Marshalltown, Iowa) went 2-for-3 with two home runs and four RBI Saturday to lead the No. 9 USC Trojans to a 10-1 non-conference victory against the No. 23 South Alabama Jaguars at Dedeaux Field. It was the second straight game that Clement has hit two home runs, becoming the first Trojan to register back-to-back multi-home run games since Jason Lane (April 24-25, 1999, vs. Arizona State).
Clement is 4-for-8 for the series with four home runs and seven RBI. He hit a three-run homer today in the fourth inning and added a solo shot in the seventh.
USC (4-2) won its third straight game by jumping out early with four runs in the bottom of the first. Michael Moon led off the inning by walking, followed by Jon Brewster who doubled to left off South Alabama starter Caleb Crosby. Clement walked and Crosby hit sophomore first baseman Joey Metropoulos with a pitch to bring the first run home. Crosby walked Lunetta for another run before being relieved by J.J. Jackson for South Alabama (0-3). Travis McAndrews singled to right and a double play ground out by Spencer Gordon plated Metropoulos for the Trojans' fourth run.
Brian Bannister (2-1) threw seven shutout innings for the Trojans, scattering six hits and striking out five while not allowing a walk. Trojan pitchers have not allowed a walk in 22 consecutive innings.
Crosby (0-1) took the loss for the Jaguars. He did not record an out, giving up four runs and walking three.
This is only the second time ever that South Alabama has started a season with an 0-3 record. Ironically, the other time was 1990 when the Jaguars also started the season on the West Coast.
Brewster and Moon both extended their hitting streaks to six games to start the 2003 season.
The series will conclude tomorrow at 1 p.m. The game will be broadcast live, along with Gametracker play-by-play, on usctrojans.com.
