Freshman Jeff Clement Breaks Out With Two Homers In 10-2 Win|
Feb. 14, 2003
LOS ANGELES - Freshman catcher Jeff Clement (Marshalltown, Ia.) went 2-for-5 with two home runs and three RBI Friday and the No. 9 USC Trojans opened a three-game series with a 10-2 win against the No. 23 South Alabama Jaguars in non-conference action at Dedeaux Field. Sophomore Joey Metropoulos (Jamul, Calif.) went 2-for-4 with a home run and four RBI as the Trojans improved to 5-0 all-time against South Alabama.
USC (3-2) scored in the bottom of the first when junior third baseman Michael Moon stole home with two outs and a 1-2 count on Metropoulos. Ironically, Moon was the last Trojan to steal home (not on a double steal) when he did it on May 26, 2001, against Oral Roberts at the 2001 NCAA First-Round Regional at Dedeaux Field.
Anthony Reyes (1-1) went 5 2/3 innings, allowing five hits, two runs, no walks and five strikeouts. Freshman left-hander Bobby Paschal threw 2 1/3 scoreless innings of relief, allowing only three hits with two strikeouts. In 44 innings this season, Trojan pitchers have allowed only 11 walks.
Clement led off the second with his first collegiate home run to right. With two outs in the Trojan third, South Alabama starter Tommie Major (0-1) hit Travis McAndrews with a pitch. Metropoulos followed with a two-run homer to left for a 4-0 USC lead.
South Alabama (0-2) scored their two runs in the sixth on an RBI double by Cole Craig and a sacrifice fly by Ryan Mulhern.
Clement added his second home run of the game with a two-run shot to right center and barely missed a third homer in the eighth with a fly ball to right that reached the warning track.
The series will continue tomorrow at 1 p.m. with the finale on Sunday (Feb. 16), also at 1 p.m. Both games will be broadcast live, along with Gametracker play-by-play, on usctrojans.com.
