LONG BEACH - Long Beach State ace Jered Weaver struck out 14 batters in seven innings Friday as the No. 9 Long Beach State 49ers defeated the USC Trojans, 3-1, in non-conference action at Blair Field. It was the regular season opener for the Trojans.

Weaver started the game by striking out 10 straight batters in front of the Blair Field crowd of 3,163, a new Long Beach State school record.

Long Beach State (3-1) scored in the first after USC freshman starter Ian Kennedy walked first baseman Mike Hofius with the bases loaded and one out. Kennedy then struck out third baseman Danny Mocny and left fielder John Bowker to end the threat.

Kennedy, the first freshman No. 1 starter for USC (0-1) since Randy Flores in 1994, went five innings and allowed only one run on two hits with three walks and eight strikeouts. After allowing the run, Kennedy retired nine straight 49ers.

"Jered set the tempo and I just wanted to keep it going," said Kennedy.

USC catcher Baron Frost led off the top of the third by reaching first after a third strike and wild pitch by Weaver. After advancing to second on a passed ball, Frost was stranded as Weaver recorded the rare feat of four strikeouts in one inning after striking out the side.

Frost started in place of preseason All-American Jeff Clement, who will not play this weekend due to an earlier bout with mononucleosis.

In the top of the fourth, USC first baseman Joey Metropoulos was hit by a pitch and advanced to third on a double by shortstop Blake Sharpe. Freshman Daniel Perales grounded out to second, scoring Metropoulos to tie the game at 1-1.

Josh Rummonds (0-1) relieved Kennedy before the bottom of the sixth and allowed the go-ahead run with two outs. After giving up a walk and a bunt single, Rummonds hit Steve Velazco and Chuck Sindlinger back-to-back to score Mocny.

Jason Vargas singled in Brad Davis for the 49ers' third run of the game in the seventh.

The series moves to Dedeaux Field tomorrow with a 1 p.m. start. USC will honor former head coach Rod Dedeaux's 90th birthday with a pre-game ceremony beginning at 12:30 p.m. Guests will include former Trojan pitcher and Hall of Famer Tom Seaver, former Los Angeles Dodgers' manager Tommy Lasorda, former Dodgers' owner Peter O'Malley and former Trojan and major leaguer Roy Smalley.

Tomorrow's game will be broadcast live, along with Gametracker play-by-play, on usctrojans.com.
