LOS ANGELES -- Freshman 2B Anthony Lunetta had three hits, including his second home run of the season, to lead the No. 11 Trojans, 9-2, over No. 22 Long Beach State in a non-conference game on Sunday afternoon at Dedeaux Field.
USC improved to 4-1 overall and is undefeated at home this season (3-0). Long Beach State fell to 1-2.
The Trojans put a run on the board first on senior 3B Justin Gemoll's single in the second inning that hit the first base bag, scoring junior DH Josh Persell from second.
Long Beach State came back to tie the score in the third at one apiece on senior RF Chuck Lopez' solo home run. Lunetta responded with a two run home run of his own in the bottom half of the inning, to take back the lead for the Trojans, 3-1.
With USC leading 4-2 in the bottom of the seventh and the bases loaded, sophomore 1B Bill Peavey singled in Lunetta and sophomore C Beau Craig. The Trojans added three more runs in the ninth when five straight batters reached base. With one out, sophomore CF Rob Garibaldi doubled and scored on sophomore LF Aaron Fausett's single. Junior SS Seth Davidson followed with another single and Lunetta reached base on an error by the third baseman that also scored Fausett. Craig then singled home Davidson.
Freshman RHP Anthony Reyes started for the Trojans and went six innings,
giving up five hits, two runs and four walks while striking out two to earn
his first collegiate win. 49er sophomore LHP Russel Rohlicek lasted five
innings, giving up seven hits, four runs and four walks while striking out
five.
