No. 11 Baseball Edges Long Beach State, 3-2, In 11 Innings

LOS ANGELES -- Junior SS Seth Davidson scored on a wild pitch by 49er freshman RHP Bo Ashabraner with one out in the bottom of the 11th inning to lift the No. 11 Trojans, 3-2, over No. 22 Long Beach State in a non-conference game on Friday evening at Dedeaux Field.

USC improved to 3-0 overall. Long Beach State (0-1) lost its first game of the season.

Davidson led off the bottom of the 11th with a double to left-centerfield off of Ashabraner (0-1) and moved to third on freshman 2B Anthony Lunetta's ground out to 49er SS Bobby Crosby. The first pitch to sophomore 1B Bill Peavey sailed over the catcher's head and to the backstop, scoring Davidson. Sophomore RHP Pete Montrenes (1-0) picked up the win for the Trojans.

Long Beach State scored first with a run in the third inning on a sacrifice bunt by senior RF Chuck Lopez that scored sophomore 2B A.J. LaBarbera from third. LaBarbera opened the inning with a walk and went to third on junior CF Robert Womack's single. The Dirtbags added another run in the sixth when sophomore DH Chris Wright singled home Lopez from third.

The Trojans came back to tie the game at two apiece in the bottom half of the sixth on freshman RF Alberto Concepcion's two-out, two-run double that scored junior DH Josh Persell and senior 3B Justin Gemoll.

USC starter, sophomore RHP Mark Prior, went 7 2/3 innings, giving up seven hits, two runs and one walk while striking out eight. Junior RHP Jeff Leuenberger

started for Long Beach State and lasted five innings, giving up two hits, no runs and six walks while striking out four.

USC will face Long Beach State tomorrow (Feb. 5) at Blair Field at 1 p.m.

 

 

The same two teams will wrap up the three-game series on Sunday (Feb. 6) at Dedeaux Field, first pitch 1 p.m.
