    THIS YEAR: After a solid freshman campaign, Petke should take another step forward as a 2000 sophomore righthanded pitcher ... He could fill any number of roles, from starter to long reliever to closer ... He throws a fastball, curveball, slider and change-up.

    MIKE GILLESPIE SAYS: Tim pitched extraordinarly well in the fall and has made progress in all aspects of his performance. His velocity and the command of his curveball and change-up have improved. Consquently, he is considered a very key pitcher and possibly even the closer.

    1999: Petke, another member of USC's impressive freshman class, was effective as a relief pitcher in 1999 ... He was 0-0 with a 4.68 ERA and had 23 strikeouts in 25 innings and 15 appearances ... He had a relief outing against UCLA (March 6) that lasted a season-high 7 1/3 innings, and he had two strikeouts while giving up six hits, two walks and one run ... He had a season-high five strikeouts in 2 2/3 innings against Arizona (March 20) ... In his single plate appearance of the season, he laid down a sacrifice bunt.

    HIGH SCHOOL: Petke was a three-sport star (baseball, basketball and football) at Portland (Ore.) Lutheran High, where he was named the 1998 Gatorade State Player of the Year for baseball as a senior ... He was a 1998 Louisville Slugger TPX All-American, a three-time All-State and All-Northwest League player as well as a two-time league MVP and state 2-A division player of the year ... As a 1998 senior, he went 8-6 with one save and a 1.70 ERA in 90 2/3 innings, striking out 170 and giving up 51 hits and 46 walks ... He was 12-2 with a 1.34 ERA as a junior, and had 164 strikeouts in 83 innings ... He once pitched a six-inning no-hitter in which he struck out all 18 batters ... In another no-hitter, he hit two home runs ... On the basketball court, he averaged 19.5 points and 11.0 rebounds a game as a senior and earned All-State second team notice ...
