MIKE GILLESPIE SAYS: ?Josh is one of our best stories. Here is a guy that served an apprenticeship for a number of years and did not get a lot of playing time, but he would not allow himself to become discouraged. He was one of our best hitters last year and was one of the real keys to our success. He comes off an all star summer in the Cape Cod League and is now among our most valuable players, certainly is one of our better hitters. He has completeness to his game and is a great leader. It?s a great story of success of a guy earning it.?

1999: As a 1999 sophomore, Persell fared well as a reserve...batted .309 and had nine RBI...played in 28 games and started 14...most of the starts were at first base or designated hitter, but he was the emergency starting catcher in one game against Cal State Northridge (April 3) and did a solid job...went 3-for-4 with two RBI against Washington State (March 27) and 3-for-5 against Texas Tech (Feb. 12)...batted .333 (7-for-21) in Pac-10 play.

1998: Persell came off the bench to play in 11 games as a 1998 redshirt freshman...went 0-for-7 overall but had two runs scored...also drove in a run against Arizona (March 21). 1997: Persell redshirted as a 1997 freshman.
