2001: Montanez will most likely be the starting left fielder this year after earning a spot in the lineup late last year...his game makes him a catalyst for the Trojans.

He will be in the mix to be our starting left fielder this year. He is very bright and instinctive player who has a complete game. He has a chance to be a really good player.”

2000: After coming off the bench most of the season, Montanez became the Trojans' starting left fielder in late April (team went 16-1 after his first start on April 25 at UC Santa Barbara)...named to the NCAA First-Round Regional All-Tournament team after going 7-for-10 (.700) with his first career home run and two RBI...went 2-for-2 with a double and three RBI on May 20 at Washington.

1999: Played in six games as a 1999 sophomore while going hitless in five at-bats.

1998: Utilized his redshirt season in 1998 while working on the baseball team’s support staff.

COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY: He spent the 1996-97 school year at Columbia University in New York where he played safety on the football team and was named the team’s Freshman of the Week three times...also made the Ivy League’s Dean’s List both semesters.

HIGH SCHOOL: Montanez played both baseball and football at Bishop Amat High in La Puente, Calif., and was named the CIF Southern Section Male Student-Athlete of the Year as a 1996 senior...had a three-year batting average of .370...in his senior year of baseball, he made the All-San Gabriel Valley and All-Del Rey League first teams...won CIF Southern Section Division I titles in both baseball and football his senior year.

PERSONAL: He played for the St. Cloud Riverbats in the Northwoods League in summer 1999...majoring in business administration...birthdate is Oct. 20, 1978.
