Rob Klein spent 19 years as a volunteer assistant coach under former head baseball coach Mike Gillespie (1987-2006), as well as the team's first-base coach.
Klein was a volunteer assistant coach for the Trojans for five seasons (1988-92), then returned in 1995 to USC after a two-year absence.
Along with John Savage and Andy Nieto, he was named one of the Assistant Coaches of the Year by Collegiate Baseball in 1998.
The 46-year-old Klein has been associated with USC head coach Mike Gillespie for the past 26 years. He played for Gillespie at College of the Canyons (1978-79) where he earned two-time All-Mountain Valley Conference honors as a right-handed pitcher.
Following his playing career at Canyons, Klein signed with the California Angels and pitched one season for the Angels' Idaho Falls rookie-class team. He then returned to College of the Canyons, where he served as the team's pitching coach from 1982-84 (the 1983 team won the California junior college championship).
He has been a member of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department for the past 24 years. He currently serves as a sergeant assigned to the custody division.
Klein and his wife, Charleen, have three children: Halie, Marlena and Wesley .
