No. 12 USC Routs Arizona State
TEMPE, Ariz. - No. 13 Arizona State (21-14, 7-10) lost to No. 12 USC (27-10, 10-7) 15-4 in front of a season-high 4,392 fans at Packard Stadium tonight.
The Trojans were led on offense by Greg Walbridge who went 4-for-6 with two runs scored and four RBI. Also helping was Jason Brown who went 1-for-4 with six RBI, hitting his second grand slam home run of the season. Marc Mirizzi also hit a home run in a 2-for-6 effort, scoring one and driving in two. Third baseman Morgan Ensberg also contributed a 3-for-5 effort with four runs scored, and two driven in. Starting pitcher Seth Etherton (5-1) picked up the win for the Trojans going five-plus innings giving up eight hits, three earned runs, and striking out eight.
The Devils were led by Dan McKinley who went 4-for-5 with one RBI. Sophomore Andrew Beinbrink extended his hitting streak to 11 games with a 2-for-4 effort. Catcher Greg Halvorson went 1-for-5 with two RBI. Starting pitcher Phil Lowery (2-2) took the loss for the Devils going four-plus innings, giving up four hits, six runs, while striking out four.
The Sun Devils conclude the three-game series with USC tomorrow afternoon, March 29 at 1 p.m. at Packard Stadium. Righthanded senior pitcher Jeff Cermak (4-1, 4.86 ERA) is expected to take the mound for ASU. Righthander Scott Henderson (5-2, 5.15 ERA) is the probable starter for Southern California. Southern California leads the series 2-0.
