Flores Pitches USC to Win
TEMPE, Ariz. - No. 13 USC (26-10, 9-7) beat No. 12 Arizona State (21-13, 7-9) 12-7 in from of a season-high 4,342 fans at Packard Stadium Thursday night.
The Trojans were led by starting pitcher Randy Flores (7-3), who tied a school record with his 40th-career win. Flores went the distance giving up only seven hits, two earned runs and striking out 12. Offensively USC was led by second baseman Wes Rachels who went 2-for-5 with a three-run home run, and five RBI. Also contributing was catcher Eric Munson who went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and three RBI.
The Devils were led by Mikel Moreno who went 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Center fielder Rudy Arguelles chipped in two hits in five at-bats and scored two runs. Relief pitcher Ryan Bradley (4-5) picked up the loss for the Devils going 2/3 of an inning, giving up four hits and five runs - one earned.
The Sun Devils face the Trojans again Friday at 7 p.m. at Packard Stadium for game two of the three-game series. Left-handed sophomore pitcher Phill Lowery (2-1, 3.53 ERA) is expected to take the mound for ASU. Right-hander Seth Etherton (4-1, 3.4 ERA) is the probable starter for USC.
