No. 9 Stanford, Peterson Blank No. 3 USC 4-0
STANFORD, Calif. - Junior right-hander Kyle Peterson (Elkkhorn, NE/Creighton Prep HS) threw a complete game six-hit shutout to lead No. 9 Stanford (12-6 overall, 1-0 in the Six Pac) to a 4-0 win over No. 3 USC (17-4, 2-2) on Friday night at Sunken Diamond. The win snapped USC's eight-game winning streak at Sunken Diamond dating back to 1994.
Peterson allowed just two runners to reach scoring position, while striking out six and not walking a batter. The win improved Peterson's career record to 27-7, and moved him into a tie for fifth with Bruce Fiala (1976-79) on Stanford's all-time win list.
The Cardinal took the lead for good in the bottom of the third inning on an RBI double to left field by freshman John Gall (Portola Valley, St. Francis HS). Stanford the took command in the fifth on run-scoring singles by sophomore Jody (Villa Park, IL/Willowbrook HS) and Gall. Junior Jay Pecci (Novato, CA/San Marin HS) went 3-for-4 with two runs scored to lead the winners.
Junior Wes Rachels (Los Angeles, CA/Loyola HS) went 2-for-3 to lead the Trojans. Senior left-hander Randy Flores (Pico Rivera, CA/El Rancho HS) took the loss for the Trojans and fell to 4-2.
The teams continue their three game series on Saturday at 1 p.m. at Sunken Diamond. The game will be televised live on SortsChannel Pacific.
