Trojans Erupt For Doubleheader Sweep
HILO, Hawaii - Solid hitting and pitching was the story as USC registered a doubleheader sweep with 7-1 and 20-3 victories over Hawai'i Hilo today.
In game one, the Trojans (12-3) scored in each of the first five innings, erupting for three runs in the third to take an early 4-0 lead against Hawai'i Hilo (7-12-1).
Starting pitcher Craig Jones (1-0) picked up the win for USC. The sophomore hurler went the first 4 1/3 innings, allowing one run on six hits. Craig walked two and struck out four.
In game two, USC pounded out 20 hits in the 17-run victory. Sophomore second baseman Robb Gorr led the hitting barrage, going 5-for-6 with three RBI. Freshman Eric Munson followed close behind with a 3-for-4, two RBI performance.
Morgan Ensberg, Jeff DePippo and Greg Hanoian also had two hits apiece for USC.
The Trojans received an outstanding effort out of the bullpen from junior pitcher Mike Weibling, who gave up just one hit in 3 1/3 innings of shut-out ball. Weibling walked one and struck out four.
The Trojans will next host Cal State Northridege on Wednesday at Dedeaux Field (3 p.m.).
