USC Blows Past Gauchos
LOS ANGELES -- Sophomore righthander Steve Immel (1-1) went 5 1/3 innings and struck out a USC-1997-best 9 batters to lead No. 2 USC to an 11-8 victory over UC Santa Barbara Tuesday at Dedeaux Field.
The Trojans are now 8-2 overall while the Gauchos drop to 5-4.
It was the 400th win for USC head coach Mike Gillespie, in his 11th year at USC.
Immel, whose previous career-best in strikeouts was 4, retired the first 8 batters he faced before giving up a 2-out walk in the third and did not allow a hit until one out in the fourth. On the night, he allowed 2 runs (just one earned) on 5 hits and 2 walks.
Offensively, USC was led by senior shortstop Marc Mirizzi, who was 4-for-5 with 3 RBI, and sophomore centerfielder Robb Gorr, who was 3-for-5 with a double and RBI.
Junior Seth Bean (2-2) started and took the loss for the Gauchos, going 6 innings and giving up 6 runs (only 2 earned) on 9 hits and no walks while striking out 4.
USC, which led 6-2 after 6 innings, increased its lead with a 5-run seventh inning, taking advantage of 4 hits and 2 walks.
The Gauchos rallied to score 3 runs in the eighth and 3 runs in the ninth off 3 Trojan relievers before USC ace reliever Jack Krawcayk came in to get the final 2 outs and record his third save.
