Munson Leads USC Past 49ers
LOS ANGELES -- Freshman catcher Eric Munson hit two home runs and had three RBIs to lead No. 3 USC to a 4-3 victory over No. 11 Long Beach State Saturday at Dedeaux Field. USC (7-1) has won the first two games of the three-game series with the 49ers (1-4).
Junior Seth Etherton started and went eight innings for the Trojans to raise his record to 2-0. He allowed three runs on eight hits while walking one and striking out two. Junior Jack Krawczyk pitched a perfect ninth inning to record the save, his second.
After Long Beach State took a 1-0 lead in the first on an RBI single by Izzy Gonzalez, Munson led off the bottom of the second with a solo home run off 49er starter Rocky Biddle (1-1).
USC added three more runs in the third inning, getting an RBI single from Robb Gorr, who then scored on Munson's second home run of the day.
Long Beach State rallied in the seventh as, with one out, Casey Martin doubled to left field and advanced to third on a single by Sam Monroy. After Steve Doherty walked, Jaron Madison's double drove in two runs to close the gap to 4-3.
Offensively for the Trojans, second baseman Wes Rachels was 3-for-3 to extend his hitting streak to seven games, every game he has played this year.
