Trojans Open Season With Doubleheader Sweep
LOS ANGELES -- USC opened its baseball season in convincing fashion, easliy sweeping past Cal State Los Angeles in doubleheader action, 17-4 and 8-1 at Dedeaux Field.
Marc Mirizzi led the offensive charge in the opener for the Trojans (0-2), going 4-for-5 with four RBIs and three runs scored. Freshman Eric Munson also opened with a bang, knocking in four with a 2-for-5 game.
However, the biggest spark may have came from leadoff man Wes Rachels, who got on base on all six plate appearances, scored four runs and hit the first Trojan home run of the season. In addition to going 2-for-2, the second baseman drew four walks and drove in two.
In the nightcap, Seth Etherton (1-0) was sparkling on the hill, limiting CSLA (0-2) to two hits over five shutout innings. He struck out eight and walked just two.
Four USC pitchers went the rest of the way, combining to allow three hits and one unearned run over four innings.
Randy Flores (1-0) picked up the win in the opener, throwing six strong innings of three-hit ball.
The Trojans return to the diamond at 3 p.m. on Tuesday when they host Loyola Marymount.
